Our Surgeons

Bruce Brient, MD - Medical Director
Dr. Bruce Brient has been a Medical Staff Associate for both North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC) and Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville, where he served as Chief of Surgery and General Surgery for over 20 years. He has also been a consultant to the Veterans Administration Medical Center since 1981. Previously, Dr. Brient served as a Lieutenant Colonel for the U.S. Army Medical Corps as Chief of Blood Transfusion Research Branch and a Surgical Research Directorate for U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command at Washington D.C. He has completed over 500 bariatric surgeries and serves as medical director for NFRMC’s bariatric surgery program. He is licensed in the state of Florida and certified by the American Board of Surgery.

A Missouri native, Dr. Brient received both his B.A. and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas (Kansas City, KS) School of Medicine. He completed residencies at University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago and Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC, where he also served as a Fellow in Cancer Research with Dr. D.B. Amos and Dr. William Shingleton.

Before joining the NFRMC team, Dr. Brient was an assistant professor and associate professor of surgery for the University of Florida’s College of Medicine at Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, FL. He also served as Chief of General Surgery for Surgical Service at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Gainesville. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Warren H. Cole Society and Alachua County Medical Society. Dr. Brient is the Medical Director for the Center for Obesity Surgery and Treatment and is accredited as a Center of Excellence surgeon through the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
